Ferns

There are several ferns that thrive in Illinois. Several native fern species are commonly found throughout the state, including the Christmas fern (Polystichum acrostichoides), maidenhair fern (Adiantum pedatum), and sensitive fern (Onoclea sensibilis). These species are well-adapted to the region's climate and soils, making them reliable choices for landscaping and naturalistic plantings in Illinois. Additionally, non-native ferns such as the Japanese painted fern (Athyrium niponicum) and autumn fern (Dryopteris erythrosora) are also great choices for landscapes in Illinois.
